Advanced Concepts in Pain Management: Pharmacology and Tough Cases

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Sharpen your analgesic decision-making skills with challenging, interactive case studies on the different options for controlling pain. In this in-depth session, you’ll learn the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the opioids and co-analgesics most commonly prescribed in cancer care. Using difficult oncologic cases to highlight pharmacologic principles, speakers will discuss drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination.

You’ll digest information on tailored opioid and co-analgesic selection based on individual patient characteristics, including pain type, hepatic and renal function, pharmacologic profile, and medical history. You’ll also cover dose titration using different administration routes (oral, transdermal, rectal, subcutaneous/IV, and intraspinal), opioid rotation and equianalgesic conversion, and route rotation.

Objectives
1. Review the pathophysiology of pain and related pharmacologic modalities along the pain pathway.
2. Analyze challenging case studies and apply advanced pharmacologic concepts to manage pain.
